AUSTIN LOCKSMITH FOR CHANGING, REKEYING, and FIXING LOCKS

Candice P. of Austin was going through a messy divorce. Her ex had moved out but still had the key, and she just didn't feel safe at home. Although money was tight, Candice called Pop-A-Lock to get an estimate on changing her locks. We listened to her concerns and then recommended a lock rekey -- a much simpler, faster, and more affordable service that would do just as good a job keeping her ex (and anyone else who had an old key) out.

Other locksmiths sometimes recommend unnecessary services that bring in more profit, taking advantage of your anxiety. Pop-A-Lock Austin saves you time and money with honest recommendations and low prices for just the services you need. Here's some more need-to-know information about changing and rekeying locks.

The Difference Between Changing and Rekeying Locks

When locksmiths rekey a lock, they simply change the tumblers and pins inside your old lock so it will no longer open for your old key. There's no damage to the lock, and no need for any new hardware (beyond a new set of keys). Rekeys are usually done when a house is purchased as a courtesy to the buyer, but can be performed as often as necessary. Pop-A-Lock can also rekey doors in your house to the same key (e.g. one key opens both front and back doors) as long as the same brand of lock is on each door.

To change a lock, a locksmith removes all parts of your old lock and replaces it with a new one. Changing locks takes more time, expertise, and hardware, making it a more expensive service. However, it may be the only option if you're stuck with a broken lock that can't be fixed or if you want to change lock brands or types. High security locks can sometimes be retrofitted into your current lock, but others will require a full lock change.

Fixing Locks

There are lots of reasons why a lock or door knob can be hard to use. A lock's tumblers can stiffen up in cold weather, you might just need a little WD40, or a poorly cut key could be the problem. Pop-A-Lock Austin can fix locks with many different issues, but some broken locks are just broken and will need to be replaced. You can always count on us to offer an honest, professional opinion on your lock.
